If you’re anything like me, you love adding a touch of nature-inspired charm to your home decor but prefer cruelty-free alternatives. That's why today, I'm excited to share a fun and imaginative project: creating your own faux entomology displays. These displays capture the intricate beauty of insects without the ethical concerns of real specimens. Plus, they’re a versatile and eco-friendly way to enhance any space with a whimsical and creative touch. Let’s dive in and get crafting!

What You’ll Need:

Step-By-Step Guide:

Step 1: Paint Your Bugs

Start by painting your toy rubber bugs to look more realistic. I use acrylic paint and even found some iridescent paint to give them a nice sheen. This part is all about getting creative with colors and details. Let them dry overnight for the best results.

Step 2: Spray Paint The Frame And Tin

Next, take apart the picture frame and the Altoids tin. Use the rubbed bronze spray paint to give both items a uniform and sophisticated look or have fun and paint in your own unique style. Let these dry overnight as well.

Step 3: Prepare The Background

While your painted items are drying, prepare the background. As a graphic designer, I love creating my own backgrounds, but you can also use beautiful scrapbook paper. To add an authentic touch, research the scientific name of the insect and create a label using an old-fashioned handwritten typeface. Alternatively, you can write them by hand for a more personal feel.

Step 4: Assemble Your Display

Once everything is dry, it’s time for the fun part—assembly!

    1. Cut and Glue the Background: Cut your chosen background paper to size and glue it into the bottom of the Altoids tin.
    2. Position and Label: Place your painted bug in the tin to visualize where the label should go. Once you’re happy with the placement, glue the label in place (double-sided tape works too).
    3. Secure the Bug: Glue your insect into the tin. Make sure it’s firmly attached and let the glue dry completely.

Step 5: Frame It Up

Place the glass back in the frame and then position the Altoids tin within the frame. The frames I found fit perfectly and the tins wedge in nice and tight. Finally, glue the frame backing onto the back of the tin for added stability.

Step 6: Display And Enjoy!

Voilà! Your new faux entomology display is ready to be showcased. These charming pieces are perfect for a feature wall, a cozy nook, or even a tabletop centerpiece. Not only do they add a unique and personalized touch to your decor, but they also make great conversation starters.

Decorating With Faux Entomology Displays

Now that you have your beautiful faux entomology displays, let’s talk about how to incorporate them into your home decor. These versatile pieces can seamlessly blend into various decor styles, from modern and minimalist to rustic and eclectic. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Feature Wall

Create a stunning feature wall by arranging multiple faux entomology displays in a grid or gallery-style layout. Mix and match different sizes and insect types to add visual interest and a touch of whimsy to your space. Or include your faux insect as part of a shadow box.

Cozy Nook

Add a faux entomology display to a cozy reading nook or study area. The natural beauty and intricate details of the insects can provide a calming and inspiring atmosphere, perfect for relaxation or concentration.

Tabletop Centerpiece

Use a faux entomology display as a unique centerpiece on a coffee table or dining table. Pair it with a few candles, some greenery, or a stack of vintage books to create an eye-catching and conversation-worthy arrangement.

Shelf Styling

Incorporate your faux entomology displays into your shelf decor. Place them alongside other decorative items like plants, framed photos, or antique finds to create a balanced and curated look.

Seasonal Decor

Switch up your displays seasonally to keep your decor fresh and exciting. For example, you can use bright and colorful insects for spring and summer, and darker, more muted tones for fall and winter.

Decorating with faux entomology displays is not only fun and creative but also allows you to showcase your personal style and love for nature. These charming pieces add a touch of elegance and curiosity to any space, making your home uniquely yours. Happy decorating!
